The Wave Pictures - Instant Coffee Baby

Not only did I appreciate his take-no-prisoners musical stylings but also the imaginative lyrical ideas I found mighty refreshing. This is a man who clearly harbours no ambition to be seen hobnobbing with Dido at the Met Bar and has opted instead to plough a righteous but lonely furrow.
- Nick Lowe

Nothing short of splendid, resplendent and heartbreaking. The future is now!
- BSR Radio

Okay, you guys. This is the deal. The Wave Pictures are despairingly good. Despairingly because they ain’t signed and they don’t have a huge following who send them flowers, photographs and panties. They should.
- Hywel’s review of The Wave Pictures in ROKU DISTRO fanzine

The Wave Pictures are currently conjuring some of the most
gleeful, magnificent pop in town.
- GUARDIAN

They ably knock out classic, literate, oven ready song after song, filled with delightful and intricate musical and lyrical twists

Scarlett Johansson - Anywhere I Lay My Head

null

Recorded at Dockside Studio in Louisiana’s Cajun country, Scarlett Johansson s debut album ANYWHERE I LAY MY HEAD features her distinctive vocal interpretations of ten songs by legendary singer-songwriter Tom Waits. It also introduces one original track, Song For Jo, which she co-wrote with David Andrew Sitek (TV on the Radio), who produced the album and lent his instrumental skills throughout. The title track comes from Waits 1985 opus Rain Dogs, and Johansson s set also pulls cuts from Alice, Swordfishtrombones, Big Time, Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, Real Gone, Small Change and Bone Machine. David Bowie adds backing vocals on two tracks, Falling Down and Fannin Street, and the disc also features the talents of Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner and multi-instrumentalist Sean Antanaitis from Celebration, among others

Release Notes:
——–
Calico Brothers debut release, the six song ‘god left town’ EP, provides a
blueprint for all that they hold dear in musical form.

Twelve string acoustics, slide guitar and drum sounds that would be perfect
emanating from your AM radio on a summer night in 1976.There’s no bludgeoning
angst to be had from a Calico tune. The imagined California of their sound has
no piercings or tattoos, it wears boot cut jeans, a full beard and is fresh from
a holiday in England. It’s happy to be where it is and even happier to have you
along if you chip in for gas.

The songs here deal with the brink of a nervous break-up, girls in transition, a
loss of faith and rock and roll cynicism. They say ‘don’t interrupt me while I’m
dancing’ but you can tell they’ll still smell nice the next day. They’re full of
hooks aimed right for your ears and make you think the live version might really
be something.

Recorded at the band’s own Double Happy Studios, the songs took shape slowly
after long Sunday dinners and short drives to Auckland’s west coast beaches. Add
the birth of a beautiful baby girl for singer Jimmy Calico to the mix and a
wonderful time of family and creativity was the incubator from which these songs
were hatched.

Three brothers, one cousin, one friend; all good…mostly.

Sloan - Parallel Play

null

The boiled down brother to their 30 song magnum opus Never Hear the End of It, Parallel Play is the latest from power pop royalty Sloan. Less a conscious answer to NHTEOI’s unabridged creative approach, Parallel Play is a continuation of the musical concepts put forth on their last album and a further exploration of the band’s four-songwriter dynamic. A term taken from the science of developmental psychology, Parallel Play is a behavior seen in young children in which they enjoy independent activities in the company of other children, something the four boys in Sloan know a lot about. As per their unique musical modus operandi, the members of Sloan wrote songs independently and then joined forces in the studio to produce yet another album of timeless, guitar-driven pop. For Sloan, Parallel Play proves once again that four times the songwriters equals four times the rock.

Elvis Costelllo - Momofuku

null

Elvis Costello has taken to his Web site to reveal the story behind “Momofuku,” his new album that was released exclusively on vinyl today (April 22).

The album includes a download card that can be activated on May 1; a CD release follows on May 6 via Lost Highway.

“The absence of much advance notice or information might seem a little strange and perverse but the record was made so quickly that I didn’t even tell myself about it for a couple weeks,” Costello says.

The sessions for “Momofuku” were inspired by work Costello did on Rilo Kiley frontwoman Jenny Lewis’ forthcoming solo album, which featured Costello’s Imposters bandmates Davey Faragher (bass) and Pete Thomas (drums).

Afterward, he booked a Los Angeles studio for six days in February to record eight newly written songs. One other song, “Song With Rose,” sports lyrics co-written with Rosanne Cash, while “Pardon Me Madam, My Name Is Eve” came out of a writing session with Loretta Lynn last year.

Release Notes:

Art springs from personal hardship? Frequently. Especially on Past Life
Crashing. Herring spent the last several years of his life tearing himself
down, picking himself up, making an unreleased version of this record, and
repeating the process. Andy Riggs wrote on Americana-UK.com, Its a superb
record full of regret, looking back, looking forward and a record that asks for
one more last chance. His mix of ballads and up-tempo rockers meld with his
wrenching melodies do not hide his disquieting search for redemption. His third
CD may be his best but it was emotionally costly. Lets hope he can get right
and make music this good again without hitting bottom a few times in the
process.

Release Notes:

I dont know if you will love Chris Mills just because I do. There tends to be
lots of apprehension when presented with music that almost-kinda-sorta sounds
like Top-40 country. Once a southern accent presents itself, the majority of us
are done weve moved on to something more intelligent. I bet hes gonna
start preaching about the healing effects of Makers Mark, is our scenes
usual response to this genre. Contrary to popular belief, not all country/folk
music reeks of idiocy. Some famous (and nameless) people are ruining it for guys
like Chris Mills. He succeeds at being witty, half-serious and provocative all
at once while, sigh, others are trying to stick boots up our asses. Well, think
of Living in the Aftermath as a little dose of hope. Its a country-tinged look
at lifes little quirks. And, yes, its wonderful.

Chris Mills fights stagnant songwriting with a mighty will. Calling All
Comrades rouses with parlor piano and triumphant horns while Living in the
Aftermath sits on a barstool with its banjo melodies and soulful organs.
Nightmare At 20,000 Feet jerks at our hearts with an agonizing performance by
Mills and a far-off slide guitar. He sings with conviction here: Theres
something out there on the wing / Face full of sparks and flashing teeth / I
think its trying to bring us down / Am I the only one who sees whats
happening? On Living in the Aftermath, every imaginable genre subset of
southern music - from blues to folk to alt-country to retro rock appears in
a convincing manner. Theres a special respect here to the forbearers of such
rich musical traditions. Mills might not carry a bright torch, but his smooth
voice should have no trouble finding willing disciples.

Atom Smashers actually, somehow, makes being politically aware fun. Layers of
horns, piano and acoustic foot-tapping guitar jive along as Mills spins his best
lyrics throughout. (Give my regards to the suicide bomber / The patriot actor
and the trust fund folksinger / Give my best to the corporate rock soldier / And
the Gitmo softball team.) I almost (read: still dont) feel like getting
involved in something, but I have a hunch Mr. Mills would be just fine if I
headed down to my local watering hole and debated oil prices with ol One-Tooth
Gerald at the end of the bar. See, Mills balances the heartfelt (Cant
Believe) and the absurd (Untitled No.1) with wondrous ease. Each time Living
in the Aftermath seems a bit too bleak or a bit too Hey! I care!, a new horn
crescendo hits or a fiddle shuffles me right back into blissful ignorance
mode. Mills is right, though, weve got a lot to work on. However, he was even
more right when he decided we could fix this screwy place with a little love,
music and sincerity. Sounds like something I can really get behind.
